Africa Celebration Day |
We had the honour of celebrating Africa Day at the Castle of Good Hope with a special full-day event dedicated to African heritage, culture, and unity. The celebration brought together guests, partners, and members of the public in a meaningful atmosphere of exchange and creativity. The event took place on the 23rd of May, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and was designed to highlight the richness and diversity of African identity through different artistic, cultural, and educational formats.
This event was made possible thanks to the support and collaboration of our valued partners, including Africa Unite, Shoprite Send, Activate Change Drivers... Their involvement played an important role in strengthening the impact of the celebration and ensuring a meaningful experience for all participants. Through their contributions, the event was able to promote community engagement, cultural awareness, and social impact.
The program featured a panel discussion bringing together speakers to exchange perspectives on African culture, identity, and development. This was followed by a fashion show showcasing African creativity, design, and heritage through both contemporary and traditional styles. Throughout the day, live performances added rhythm and energy to the event, creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere for all attendees.
We were also deeply honoured to welcome the Ambassador of Zambia, along with distinguished guests who contributed to making this celebration even more significant. Their presence reinforced the importance of cultural dialogue and international connection within the African continent. Overall, the event reflected a strong sense of unity, pride, and celebration of Africa’s cultural richness and shared future.

One YeYe International
A few days ago, the Castle of Good Hope had the honour of welcoming James from One Yeye International following his remarkable journey from Zambia to South Africa. Over the course of 34 days, he cycled across borders with determination, resilience, and a powerful message of hope and inspiration for the youth of Africa and the world.
The event was a meaningful and inspiring moment, bringing together guests and supporters to celebrate not only his achievement but also the values of perseverance, courage, and self-belief that his journey represents. James shared powerful reflections on his experience, reminding everyone present that no obstacle is too great when driven by purpose and vision.
Hosting such an inspiring individual at the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa made the occasion even more memorable. His visit left a lasting impression on all who attended and served as a true celebration of the African spirit, resilience, and the power of believing in one’s dreams.

Friends Day Centre
On the 19th of May, the Castle of Good Hope had the pleasure of welcoming visitors from Friends Day Centre in Maitland, a facility dedicated to supporting and caring for people living with disabilities. The visit was a meaningful opportunity to share history, culture, and connection within one of South Africa’s most significant heritage sites.
During their time at the Castle, the group enjoyed an informative and engaging tour led by Mr Sonwabile Maxebengula, Heritage, Culture and Education Officer, who shared valuable insights into the rich history and significance of the Castle of Good Hope. The experience offered visitors the opportunity to learn more about South Africa’s heritage in an interactive and welcoming environment.
The visitors were accompanied by their dedicated caregivers, whose support and commitment helped ensure that everyone had a comfortable and enjoyable experience throughout the day. We are truly honoured to have hosted Friends Day Centre and hope the group left with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa. Nakba Day
On the 16th of May, the Castle of Good Hope hosted a commemorative event in observance of Nakba Day, a day that remembers the displacement of approximately 700,000 Palestinians during the events surrounding the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the establishment of the State of Israel. The event provided a space for reflection, dialogue, and remembrance within a meaningful historical setting.
The programme included a series of guest speakers who shared perspectives on history, identity, resilience, and the importance of preserving collective memory. Attendees were given the opportunity to engage with discussions that encouraged awareness and understanding of the historical significance of Nakba Day and its continued impact today.
The event also featured entertainment and cultural elements that contributed to the atmosphere of unity and reflection throughout the day. The Castle of Good Hope was honoured to host this important occasion and to provide a platform for education, dialogue, and community engagement.

Maskandi festival day
On the 10th of May, the Castle of Good Hope came alive with music, culture, and celebration as it hosted the Maskandi Festival – Mother’s Day Edition, organised by Doek On Fleek Lifestyle under the powerful theme “I Am An African.” The event brought together music lovers, families, and supporters of African culture for an unforgettable experience celebrating identity, heritage, and unity.
The festival featured performances from some of South Africa’s renowned Maskandi artists, including Khuzani, Shenge, Mjolisi, and many other talented performers who delivered electrifying performances throughout the day. Guests enjoyed an atmosphere filled with vibrant energy, traditional sounds, dance, and cultural pride, transforming the Castle into a lively celebration of African music and expression.
As part of the Mother’s Day celebrations, the event also honoured the important role of mothers and women within communities, creating a joyful and meaningful occasion for attendees of all ages. The Castle of Good Hope was honoured to host such a dynamic cultural event and to provide a platform where music, heritage, and community could come together in celebration of the African spirit.
