Sonwabile Maxebengula is a South African tourism and heritage professional with a strong academic foundation and a passion for cultural preservation and education. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Tourism Management from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (2018), a qualification that equipped him with comprehensive knowledge in tourism development, sustainable destination management, cultural resource planning, and visitor experience design. Mr Maxebengula is in pursuit of attaining his master’s degree in the heritage and tourism education field.

With a deep appreciation for history and community identity, Mr Maxebengula has built his career around the intersection of tourism, heritage, and education. His academic training provided him with the skills to understand how tourism can be used not only as an economic driver but also as a tool for cultural preservation and community empowerment.

Currently serving as a Heritage, Culture and Education Manager, Mr Maxebengula plays a vital leadership role in safeguarding cultural assets while promoting public engagement and learning. In this capacity, he oversees heritage site management, educational programming, cultural exhibitions, and community outreach initiatives. His work involves collaborating with stakeholders, government bodies, educational institutions, and local communities to ensure that heritage resources are preserved and meaningfully interpreted for diverse audiences.

He has driven a project with an organisation from the Netherlands called Face to Face, an exchange programme for the youth in high schools both in South Africa and abroad (2016). He further served as an advisor to the curatorial committee of the Cocreate an Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands initiative (2021). His recent project was with an author and project director, Dr Mary Elizabeth Lange, in a cultural and educational programme named Geomotional– vorentoe and he was granted the honour to write a foreword for a book based on the project titled Geomotional: Geometrics Past and Present, compiled by Dr Lange, he is looking forward to what the future holds as his journey continues…
